The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) serves more than 28 million licensed drivers with 35 million registered vehicles, utilizing DMV.CA.GOV as the primary online communications and service channel. The DMV website was recognized by visitors and staff alike as being confusing, burdened with a user experience that hinders rather than helps DMV customers in need of important information, and ineffective at guiding customers toward greater utilization of services available online, by phone, and mail.
SO much opportunity for true impact.



A broad visual approach, one that captures “We are California” through the lens of illustration. Creating a library of iconic environments, spot illustrations, and decorative elements to support the user’s journey at every turn.
Through a thoughtful and extensive discovery phase, my team was able to hone in, gain trust, and confidently move forward toward execution. I had the great opportunity to pilot my own workshop, Design Shopping, with great success. (You can read more about that here.)
